Would you like to further your education beyond the boundaries of your degree program? Are you interested in finding out how diverse academic disciplines work (together) and how they can be combined? You like thinking outside the box, are naturally curious and have always wanted to know more? Then the Q+ program is the right place for you!

Q+ is a flexible add-on program to your normal JGU degree program which allows you to expand your studies within an interdisciplinary group of students coming from all faculties. Together we tackle current scientific and social issues. Our interdisciplinary Q+ courses are developed by Q+ students, JGU instructors, as well as external cooperating partners from all over the world. In addition, as a Q+ student you also gain access to selected courses and lectures from the regular JGU course catalogue of JGU that you could not attend otherwise, and we are also offering exciting internships, field trips and (international) exchange opportunities. After your successful participation in a certain number of courses you will receive the Q+ certificate of completion.

Have we sparked your interest? Then become part of the Q+Community and apply now! Or just continue exploring our website and discover our diverse offerings. If you have any questions, simply contact us at studienprogrammqplus@uni-mainz.de. We would love to welcome you at Q+!

Our program mostly offers two types of courses: Q+ courses that have been designed exclusively and specifically for Q+ students and select cross-listed courses (open courses) that are regularly offered in the JGU semester course catalogue from a range of disciplines and are open for Q+ students to attend.

In Q+ courses, a special focus is placed on the topic of “Knowledge and Scholarship: Epistemology and Reflections on Academic Work,” which outlines fundamental questions concerning the creation and safeguarding of academic knowledge in the disciplines, but also the history, role, and responsibility of science and scholarship in our society.

The Q+ study program includes a wide range of learning formats, including seminars, block seminars, workshops, conferences, research-based internships, projects, and field trips. Just have a look through our current and past schedules of events and course catalogs!

You are free to choose from our course catalog each semester. So you decide for yourself which Q+ courses and open courses you would like to attend. You can attend as many courses as you like. However, you are also welcome to take a break, e.g. because you are writing your bachelor’s thesis, are abroad, or have personal reasons.

There are two main types of courses at Q+: Our Q+ courses are newly conceptualized and organized by the Q+ team each semester. The core area knowledge and scholarship outlines fundamental questions concerning the creation and safeguarding of academic knowledge in the disciplines, but also the history, role, and responsibility of science and scholarship in our society. The topics at Q+ are current and diverse, and we strive to respond to the interests of our students. Please feel free to contact us if you have any requests or ideas for a Q+ course!

The open courses offered by the departments at JGU are taught by instructors who open their regular courses to Q+students. For example, as a physics student, you can take part in a theology seminar that would otherwise not be open to you.

In order to successfully complete the Q+ program, you must earn a total of 20 credit points (CP) during your participation, which may extend beyond your bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and into your doctoral studies. The number of CP per course is based on the amount of work and time required and is specified for each course. To receive your certificate, you must have successfully completed at least two Q+ courses, at least one of which must be from the core area Knowledge and Scholarship. You can also earn an additional 10 CP for an advanced certificate of completion of the Q+ study program, for a total of 30 CP. In both variants, especially the extended one, an international exchange to suitable partner institutions is also possible. This is done in close coordination with the departments.

If you do not achieve the 20 credit points, we will nonetheless issue you with a certificate of your achievements. This means that you will receive a Q+ certificate in any case!

Die Bewerbungsfrist für das Sommersemester 2026 endet am 14.02.2026.

For questions regarding the application process, please contact the Q+ Team at studienprogrammqplus@uni-mainz.de.

JGU students who are enrolled in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degree programs (Bachelor, Master, state exam, PhD etc.) and who are at least in their 2nd university semester at the time of application. The reason is that students should first settle into the university and their program of study before starting a supplementary program with Q+. Only students who are in their very first semester at any higher education institution cannot apply for Q+. However, if you have already studied for a semester at another higher education institution or in another subject and are in your first bachelor’s semester in your new subject at JGU, you can apply for Q+. And if you are in a master’s degree program, you can definitely apply.

Also, RMU students who are enrolled at Goethe University Frankfurt or Technical University Darmstadt can apply for Q+.

The Q+Community consists of open-minded, curious, motivated, critically thinking, and socially-minded individuals from all disciplines who actively help shape our program. To achieve this, we need commitment from all participating students and teachers so that we can jointly explore socially relevant topics and work on them in an interdisciplinary manner. Applying for the Q+ study program requires some effort, but it serves to assess the motivation of applicants, which is necessary for regular participation in Q+. At Q+, students and teachers greatly appreciate this committed and reliable type of community.

Furthermore, as a small program with limited staff and resources, we are only able to manage a limited number of participants.

Please submit the following documents, compiled in the order listed below, in one PDF document (max. 5 MB) by email:

  1. Application form
  2. Letter of motivation
  3. Transcript of records (including failed attempts) of previously earned credits
  4. Proof of higher education entrance qualification
  5. Proof of completed degree programs (if applicable)

Optionally, you may add a recommendation.

1. Application form (PDF): Includes personal information and highlights from your curriculum vitae.

2. Letter of motivation: Your motivation is of central importance for your application. For the letter of motivation, please answer three questions as carefully and thoughtfully as possible, each in max. 1000 characters (incl. spaces):

  • Why do you want to participate in the Q+ study program?
  • How would the Q+ study program benefit from your participation?
  • If you could design an event that would be implemented by the teaching staff of the Q+ study program, what would it look like?

3. Transcript of records: A current Transcript of Records can be downloaded from the Jogustine platform. The particular form used depends on the degree program. Please make sure that your form includes failed attempts (exception: medicine).

4. Proof of general qualification for university studies: High-school diploma/A-Levels and transcript (as a simple scan/copy)

5. Proof of completed degree programs: e.g., Bachelor’s degree diploma/certificate (as a simple scan/copy)

Recommendation form (PDF): It is recommended that applicants include a letter of recommendation from a JGU faculty member (or, if applicable, a faculty member from another university) with their application. To do this, instructors fill out the recommendation form and send it directly to the Q+ study program. Please note that only one recommendation form can be submitted per applicant. We advise you consult with the instructors first before sending them the form!

If you have not yet had direct contact with teaching staff, for example, because you have only attended lectures in your program of study so far, you can omit the recommendation.

Please send all application documents, compiled in one PDF, before the deadline via email to studienprogrammQplus@uni-mainz.de

NOTE: By submitting your application, you expressly confirm that you have read and accept the data protection declaration contained therein.

All applicants receive a notification by email as to whether their application was accepted or rejected.

Q+ is open to motivated and creative students with strong critical-thinking skills and academic backgrounds from all areas of the university. There is no grade point average that guarantees acceptance to Q+. The selection committee considers each application based on its individual merits.

Criteria for the selection of applicants include the following:

  • Scholastic curiosity and passion for knowledge,
  • Interest in interdisciplinary engagement,
  • A high level of motivation and aptitude,
  • Quality of academic achievements,
  • Engagement in social and community issues, as well as extracurricular interests.

Q+ students come from all faculties of JGU and possess a wide range of different skills and abilities. Due to the high diversity of the students, a comprehensive application procedure drawing on several different documents is a necessity.

In your letter of motivation you get to tell us what interests you about Q+. But don’t worry! This isn’t about perfect phrasing and writing style.

The transcript allows us to assess how well you are doing in your studies and how stable your progress is. Q+ is not supposed to distract from your main course of study, but to supplement it in a productive manner. You do not need exceptional grades to join Q+.

With the recommendation form, an instructor’s personal assessment can help us find out whether or not Q+ is a good match for you. We are aware that some students have not yet had the opportunity to establish personal contact with instructors. In some courses of study, the first semesters only consist of lectures, precluding personal contact. Therefore, recommendations are optional.

Further qualifications and experiences listed on your application form, such as volunteer work and foreign exchanges are likewise optional. Not everyone has the time and resources for volunteer work or exchanges.

Using these documents and references, we strive to assemble an overall impression of each applicant, giving everyone a chance to showcase their abilities and experiences. For the Q+ selection committee, it is essential to get a sense of your personality and your individual strengths to decide if you would profit from joining Q+.

We are delighted that you are interested in being part of the Q+ Study Program! Bringing together students and instructors at the JGU with external institutions, the Q+ Program forges connections between the disciplines as well as between society and academia.

With Q+, you will have the opportunity to create courses for and with motivated students from all academic backgrounds. Alternatively, you can also choose to cross-list your regular courses, opening enrollment to students from other programs of study. Whichever approach you choose, the Q+ team will be there to provide all the support you need.

If you already offer a course that has these types of interdisciplinary linkages and you would like to work with students from diverse academic backgrounds, then you can choose to open your course to Q+ students. You determine how many guest students can be admitted on top of your normal enrollment. You also specify whether Q+ students have to complete the same assignments as your normal course participants, or whether they are given other assignments.

If you are interested in offering a course in the Q+ program next semester, please fill out this course proposal and send it by email to the Q+Team.

To ensure that students from other fields can adequately prepare for your course and follow its progression, required knowledge (e.g., language proficiency, knowledge of a specific method or text canon, knowledge of an instrument, etc.) should be listed in detail in this form.

The steering committee puts together a varied and interdisciplinary program from the event proposals. You will be informed if your event has been included in the Q+ program. Q+students can now register via Jogustine during the registration periods.

At the beginning of the semester, we will inform the student advising office responsible for your faculty about the participants. The Q+ students will then be enrolled via CampusNet. After the course concludes, we kindly ask you to inform us of the regular attendance and passed/failed academic performance of the participating Q+ students, as well as any suggestions for improvement.

Please note that the Dean’s Office of your faculty must approve the offering of courses in the Q+ study program.

You can always rely on the support of the Q+Team and contact us with any questions.

Q+ gives you the freedom to develop flexible and innovative formats for your courses. Interdisciplinarity is at the heart of Q+: this encompasses courses that deal with an interdisciplinary subject that is particularly suitable for students from outside of your discipline – or are even designed with such students in mind. Other Q+ courses reflect upon knowledge and science, entailing discussions of epistemological, theoretical, and/or historical questions.

With Q+, there are no limits to the places you can go! Experience has shown that courses scheduled as blocks are best integrated into Q+ students’ academic schedules. In principle, however, a wide number of course formats are possible. We are happy to advise you regarding suitable formats and scheduling.

Examples of Q+ courses can be found here.

If you are interested in offering a course in the Q+ study program, we would be delighted if you would contact us by email.

To ensure that students from other fields can adequately prepare for your course and follow its progression, desired knowledge (e.g., language proficiency, knowledge of a specific method or text canon, knowledge of an instrument, etc.) should be mentioned.

Participation in courses offered as part of the Q+ Study Program is not graded. Students are given a mark of “pass” or “fail.”
Evaluating student performance can be designed with flexibility in mind. Students are given credit for the workload, and if desired, they can also earn credit points (1 credit point corresponds to a 30-hour workload). A course assignment can include, for instance, a term paper or a short essay, a presentation, an in-person discussion at the end of the term with the instructor, an oral examination, or a report. We are happy to advise you on all matters regarding credit points.

“Q+ is making university more universal.”

Prof. Dr. Helen May-Simera, Institute of Molecular Physiology (Faculty 10)

Here you will find all news and events related to Q+. From announcements of our field trips and celebrations, to Q+’s media coverage, and student reports on particularly successful Q+ events – you won’t miss a thing here!

The Q+ program is home to a continually growing community of open-minded and curious individuals who want to know more. The Q+ community forges bridges between society and academia. Members include students and instructors from the JGU and external institutions that are instrumental in making Mainz the center of science and research that it is, as well as other cooperation partners who shape culture and society.

Q+ creates opportunities for intensive networking at various get-together events. Here are a few impressions from our joint excursions and celebrations.

For current impressions of Q+ courses and community events, you can follow the Q+ student representatives Instagram account here (in German).

In the Q+ program, you don’t just learn with each other, but from each other. Therefore, we place great importance on exchange within the Q+ student community. The interdisciplinary exchange is not limited to joint seminars, projects, or field trips, but also takes place outside of courses. For example, every October at the start of the semester, we organize a hiking trip – you can see the photos and reports at this page.

We would be delighted to welcome you to one of our meetings! If you are not yet participating in the Q+ study program and would like to talk to us or other Q+ students, then simply send us an email at StudienprogrammQPlus@uni-mainz.de. We will be happy to inform you about upcoming dates.

At Q+, students have the opportunity to realize their own ideas for courses and gain initial experience in teaching. Together with the Q+ Team and teaching staff, students can design and teach courses. They are also supported by the university didactics of JGU, which prepares them for their own courses with individual teaching advice and peer coaching.

In the Q+ course catalog, courses that were created with the initiative and/or active participation of students are marked with the following logo:

If you have an idea for a course, please feel free to contact us at: StudienprogrammQPlus@uni-mainz.de. We look forward to working with you!

See an interview here with a Q+ student who developed his own course.

More than 200 instructors from nearly every department at the JGU have opened their courses to Q+ students, or have created innovative formats for Q+ students with the help of the Q+ team. If you’re thinking about giving free reign to your creativity with Q+, working with other instructors and/or our cooperation partners to conceptualize a course, please get in touch with us. More information on offering a course is available here. If you would like to speak with other Q+ instructors, let us know and we will be happy to put you in touch.

“For me, Q+ means sharing amazement! Through Q+, I have met many nice, committed, and enthusiastic people.”

Ylfa Günther, Catholic Theology (Mag. Theol. student)

Through collaboration with external partnerships, Q+ creates cross-connections between JGU students and teaching staff, as well as with many societal areas, including arts, culture, and economy. Through this networking, socially relevant questions are interdisciplinarily explored and critically discussed in new ways. Our partner institutions also benefit from collaborating with Q+ students from all faculties of JGU by gaining fresh interdisciplinary perspectives on their daily work. Our collaborations have so far resulted in formats such as field trips, fireside chats, internships, exhibitions, plays, and workshops. Our goal is to make the potential of the Mainz science hub accessible to JGU students and to give them the opportunity to further their education and network regionally and internationally.

If you are interested in developing a course with Q+, feel free to email us. You can get an overview of our previous partnerships by clicking on the button.

Since 2023, the Q+ study program has also offered students an international perspective. The Q+ study program has currently established contacts and partnerships with the German Institute for Japanese Studies in Tokyo/Japan and the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation (ISI) at Kyushu University in Fukuoka/Japan. Learn more about the official start of this cooperation here.

Since the beginning of the collaboration with the German Institute for Japanese Studies and Kyushu University, regular joint online events as well as academic and student exchanges have been offered. In the coming years, international relations will be further expanded. Are you interested in going to Japan with Q+? Then please contact us. We are happy to help and support you!

„The core concept of Q+ is to reinvent education as an issue-based, interdisciplinary, interactive endeavor. That’s also very much what we are pursuing at Kyushu University. Being able to make this bilateral connection between our two institutions is an absolute privilege.”

Prof. Dr. Jan Lauwereyns, Senior Vice President of Kyushu University, Japan

For all information regarding the content offered by the Japanese partners (Kyushu University, German Institute for Japanese Studies), the Q+ study program team is responsible. Q+ nominates interested individuals for the partner university and provides information about the study program in Japan. A study stay in Japan is possible for one or two semesters, depending on your wishes and plans for your program of study. Please feel free to contact the Q+ team.

The International Office is a good source of information for all fundamental, organizational, and financial questions regarding a stay abroad, providing several links to fellowships on its website. Information from the International Office can be found at: https://www.studium.uni-mainz.de/auslandsaufenthalte/

The application to the host institution in Japan takes place in consultation with the Q+ team and the respective program of study. There you will also receive all important information regarding application documents, application deadlines, and you will be officially nominated in Japan by the Q+ study program. Important information about the exchange with Kyushu University and the application process can be found on the Kyushu University page.

In addition to the application in Japan, the financing of the stay abroad should also be well planned. Since Kyushu University is a partner university of Q+, you do not need to pay tuition fees in Japan and will be nominated for a free place. To finance living expenses and flights, you can apply for a fellowship, for which a separate application process with its own deadlines must be observed (see Financing). Important information about Kyushu and application dates can be found on this information sheet.

Some Japanese partner universities of the JGU offer Japanese language courses lasting several weeks (between three weeks and three months) for interested JGU students. If you are planning a study-oriented stay in Japan, you are welcome to apply for such a language stay beforehand as preparation. The programs offered usually focus not only on the language but also on the culture and society of Japan. The programs are very diverse and sometimes include group excursions that introduce participants to the traditions of Japan. Information on the possibilities can be found here and here. If you are interested in a language course, please feel free to contact us.

JGU Mainz participates in PROMOS (“Program to Increase the Mobility of German Students”) and announces the individual funding programs. Scholarships for studying abroad are awarded in a quality-oriented selection process conducted by JGU and are intended for stays abroad of up to six months. The awarding of scholarships is based on the DAAD’s funding guidelines. The application deadline depends on the desired study period in Japan, depending on whether a stay in the summer or winter semester is planned. The application deadline for study visits during the winter semester is March 31 of the same year, and for study visits beginning in the summer semester, it is October 31 of the previous year.

The DAAD offers annual scholarships for students (bachelor’s and master’s programs, state examinations, and older degree programs) for two-semester stays abroad. Applications for the scholarship and selection are handled directly by the DAAD in Bonn.
The application deadline is in February each year; please refer to the DAAD website for the exact date.

There is also the possibility to complete internships in Japan. If there is interest, these can also be financed through an ERASMUS fellowship in consultation with the Q+ Team. The ERASMUS program also enables partial funding for internships in countries outside Europe: www.eu-servicepoint.de

Courses can be freely chosen at the Japanese partner university. This can be done purely based on interest, as topics may be offered there that are not available at JGU. Additionally, it may be useful to take some courses at the Japanese partner institutions that are also academically relevant to your respective program of study at JGU.

Successfully completed courses at the Japanese host institution can be recognized as credits within the Q+ program. In addition, there is the possibility to have the subject-related courses taken in Japan recognized within your respective program of study. It is advisable to discuss the selected courses at the Japanese host institution with the Q+ Team and, if necessary, with the student advising office of your program of study before your stay abroad. After returning from abroad, recognition of successfully completed courses abroad can be discussed either with the Q+ Program team or, if recognition in the subject is desired, with the respective responsible student advising office.

“My stay at Kyushu University in Japan was a unique chance to advance my studies and, at the same time, grow as a person. The experiences I was able to make thanks to Q+ will stay with me for the rest of my life.“

Sebastian Auer, International Economics and Public Policy (Masterstudierender)

Q+students participated in the first two Europe Asia-Pacific Undergraduate Research Symposia (EAPURS) on September 20, 2024, and September 18-19, 2025. This series of international student conferences is organized by the University of Canberra (Australia)

EAPURS will take place again in September 2026. If you are interested please write us at studienprogrammqplus@uni-mainz.de.

“Q+ offers students and instructors a fantastic opportunity for transdisciplinary exchange on subjects that concern us all.“

Dr. Irina Tavlaridou, Specialist for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy, Psychoanalyst
Dr. Anna Herrmann, Psychological Psychotherapist, Psychoanalyst

The Q+ Team is responsible for the smooth running of the Q+ study program. For example, we create the semester program, plan events, and are contact persons for teaching staff and students. We take care of all aspects of your participation in the Q+ study program. You are welcome to contact us with your questions: StudienprogrammQPlus@uni-mainz.de.

The Q+ study program was initially funded by the Gutenberg Lehrkolleg for a five-year design and testing phase.. On July 5, 2019, the Senat of JGU Mainz gave its final approval to Q+, a year and a half before the end of the test phase. Since 2021, Q+ has been a permanent part of the JGU education system.

The legal basis for Q+’s work in terms of higher education and examinations is the „Ordnung der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz für das Studium und die Prüfungen im Studienprogramm Q+“ , which came into force in August 2019. The regulations also govern the tasks of the Q+ Steering Committee in a fundamental and legally binding manner. Together with the Q+ Coordination Office, the Steering Committee is responsible for all matters relating to the Q+ study program, in particular its organization, quality assurance, and further development. In addition, the steering committee appoints a selection committee that decides on the admission of students to the Q+ study program. The Q+ Coordination Office handles day-to-day business and communication and coordinates all administrative processes, in particular event and exam management. Specific provisions on this matter are set out in the „Geschäftsordnung für den Lenkungsausschuss, seine Ausschüsse und für das Koordinierungsbüro“. You can view the university’s internal minutes of the Q+ Steering Committee here.

All students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs of study at JGU (Bachelor, Master, state examination, etc.) whose application was successful.

During your program of study at JGU (from the third university semester until your master’s degree), you have the opportunity to participate in Q+. You can attend as many events per semester as you wish. The duration of your participation is therefore up to you.

Once you have been admitted to the Q+ study program, you can register for any number of events via Jogustine. You can access Q+ registration via the menu items Registration > Module/Event Registration > Program of Study > Q+ > Events and Services.

At Q+, you have two registration phases available. We will inform you by email about all registration phases. Depending on whether this is your first semester with Q+ or if you have been with us longer, different dates apply to you.

For newly admitted students: After your admission to Q+, you can register during a phase exclusively for newly admitted Q+ students. This usually takes place two weeks before the beginning of the lecture period. If there are more registrations than available spots at the end of this phase, spots will be allocated randomly. Your second registration phase is the remaining spot allocation phase, which for Q+ is one week before the beginning of the lecture period. Here, it’s first come, first served!

For students who have been with us for more than one semester: The first Q+ registration phase is available to you, which falls within the general main registration phase of the JGU and always takes place in the last three weeks of the previous semester. If there are more registrations than available spots at the end of this phase, spots will be allocated randomly. The second registration phase is the remaining spot allocation phase, which for Q+ is one week before the beginning of the lecture period. Here, it’s first come, first served!

Please note that your registration is binding. We kindly ask you to regularly attend the events you have chosen. When selecting events, consider your current workload and time commitment for your regular program of study, and only register for events you can and truly wish to attend.
Please use the remaining spot allocation phase to unregister from events you cannot attend, to free up your spot for your fellow students.
If, for any reason, you cannot attend an event after the semester begins, please inform the Q+ Team and the lecturers. Should any issues arise with registrations, please contact us.

Yes. We will gladly issue you a certificate of attendance for the events you have attended.

No. Once you have completed Q+, you will receive an additional transcript of records from us with all your successfully completed Q+ events. Please inform us about your degree, so that we can issue you a Q+ certificate.

Simply send us an email and inform us about your upcoming graduation. You will then receive a Q+ certificate from us for your successfully completed courses. If you stay at JGU for your master’s degree, you can continue to participate in Q+. You do not need to reapply.

No. You do not need to reapply.

Unless prevented by illness, childcare, caregiving, pregnancy, a study-related stay abroad, an internship, or the completion of your final thesis, you must, over the course of two consecutive semesters of studies, have successfully participated in at least one course to remain in the Q+ program.

Yes. You can take a break from Q+ for one or two semesters. You do not need to reapply after your interruption. Please inform us of your plans in this regard.

No. Since Q+ is an supplementary program to your subject program of study, only the credits from courses that are listed in our course program apply.

Yes, if you do not have this course credited for your regular program of study and if you have discussed it with us in advance.

To successfully participate in a course, you should be present for at least 80% of the time. It is at the discretion of the teaching staff whether you have successfully participated despite absences.

With Q+, it is possible to design and offer your own courses and gain initial experience in teaching. You will be supported by the Q+ team and JGU’s university didactics department. If you have an idea, please contact us. Further information can be found on our page under Network >> Students.

The Q+ team is happy to assist you in person, by email, or by phone. Simply get in touch!
