From a nutritional point of view, meat provides high-quality protein, essential amino acids and micronutrients such as iron, zinc and vitamin B12. These nutrients can also be obtained from plant-based or technologically refined alternatives, but this requires more conscious choices and, in some cases, supplementation.

From an ecological perspective, conventional meat production is considered resource-intensive: compared to plant-based foods, it causes significantly higher greenhouse gas emissions, requires more land area and contributes to biodiversity change in many regions. At the same time, new forms of production – such as cultured meat or alternative protein sources – have the potential to be more environmentally friendly, but are not yet fully established technologically and economically.

We discuss this tension with international and interdisciplinary experts from Germany, Japan and Taiwan. 10 Japanese students from ISI/Kyushu, 10 German students from Q+/Mainz and 10 students from NSYSU/Taiwan work together in mixed international teams, supervised by international, interdisciplinary lecturers. Together we’ll discuss four different aspects on the future of animal-based food production with considerations of human health, animal welfare and environmental sustainability.

Schedule:

Monday, May 11:
09:30 – 11:00 h Prof. Dr. Jan Lauwereyns/Kyushu: One Health and the Production and Consumption of Food
11:00 – 12:30 h question-and-answer

Monday, May 18:
09:30 – 11:00 h Prof. Dr. Jan Lauwereyns/Kyushu: Deciding How to Decide with Respect to Food Choice
11:00 – 12:30 h question-and-answer

Monday, June 01:
09:30 – 11:00 h Prof. Dr. Thomas Vilgis, Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research/Mainz:
11:00 – 12:30 h question-and-answer

Monday, June 08:
09:30 – 11:00 h Dr. Shih-Hsiang Sung: Cultural Perspectives on Meat Consumption and the Rise of Plant-Based “Future Foods”
11:00 – 12:30 h question-and-answer

Learning objectives:

– knowledge of fundamentals of animal-based food production, animal welfare, environmental sustainability and sustainable meat production

– harnessing the 3Rs for animal welfare

– teamwork in interdisciplinary and international groups

– preparation and moderation of a teaching class

Instructors:

Prof. Dr. Jan Lauwereyns, Professor of Neuroscience,is Senior Vice President and Professor at Kyushu University, Japan. Discriminatory and anti-democratic attitudes have risen sharply in recent years.

The aim of the Q+Workshop is to strengthen participants’ skills in dealing with discriminatory slogans and defamatory hate speech. Participants will learn how to respond calmly to verbal attacks and better cope with situations in which they initially feel helpless in the face of simplistic, inflammatory, or inhumane statements. The training serves as an aid to meaningful argumentation and is intended to encourage calm and courageous behavior.

To this end, the characteristics and functions of prejudice and discrimination are examined and awareness of their individual and societal effects is raised. Furthermore, the general principles of communication and its conditions, as well as typical communication strategies of the extreme right and right-wing populists and possible counter-reactions to them, are discussed. The argumentation training explains social-psychological, sociological, and political motives and contexts and introduces methods of analysis and communication techniques. In addition, basic recommendations for action are to be discussed together in the training.

Participants have the opportunity to contribute their own experiences. Strategies are developed together to respond appropriately in critical situations. The training includes discussion, exchange of experiences, and input. Central to this is the transition to a climate-neutral economic system, as envisaged by the European Green Deal. This transformation process requires not only massive investment in renewable energies and infrastructure, but also a profound reorganization of industrial value chains. At the same time, dependence on global energy markets creates structural vulnerability, which is further exacerbated by geopolitical tensions and volatile prices.

Furthermore, the social dimension of the energy transition remains a critical factor. Rising energy prices and unevenly distributed transition costs jeopardize social acceptance and political stability. The EU is thus faced with the task of combining environmental objectives with social justice while ensuring technological innovation, economic competitiveness, and security of supply. This multiple requirement makes it clear that European environmental and energy policy can only be successful in the long term through a combination of supranational coordination, national implementation, and local participation.

During our one-day Q+ excursion to Strasbourg, France, we will first learn about the tasks, functions, and procedures of the European Parliament. But what exactly are Monte Carlo simulations and how do they work? In this course, we will explore this question and gain some initial practical experience with Monte Carlo simulations.

Monte Carlo simulations use computer-generated (pseudo) random numbers to generate a large number of possible data sets from an underlying probability distribution. These data sets can then be analyzed using statistical methods to make statements about the system described by this probability distribution (e.g., a ferromagnetic crystal or the US electorate).

We will deal with the following topics in detail:

1. Fundamentals of Monte Carlo simulation: Law of large numbers

2. Generating random numbers with a computer

3. Simple applications in social and economic sciences: analysis of scenarios

5. Simple applications in statistics: Bootstrap resampling

6. Importance sampling and Markov chains

7. Application in physics: spin models

The theoretical discussion is interspersed with numerous practical exercises on the computer:

1. Buffon’s needle: an experimental determination of pi

2. “Random numbers fall mainly in the planes”: good and bad pseudo-random generators

3. Integration using a dart: another definition of pi

4. Who will move into the White House? Simulation of the US presidential election based on polls

5. Baron von Münchhausen as a statistician: confidence intervals using bootstrap resampling

6. “Bleeping magnets, how do they work”: Simulation of a model for ferromagnetism

Prerequisites for successful participation are basic knowledge of or interest in probability theory. On online platforms, it is easy to provide one-sided information on controversial topics and hardly allow other views. This is not a new phenomenon. People have always tried to influence others and shape opinions with false information. However, digitalization and social networks have significantly intensified this development. Today, fake news is spread deliberately and on a massive scale in order to manipulate public opinion or facts (“alternative facts”), trigger emotions such as fear and uncertainty, stir up sentiment, and promote extreme opinions such as xenophobia and discrimination. That is why it is so important not to accept or forward questionable content without checking it first. Facts can and must be verified, and information must be checked for validity. But how?

After presenting and discussing the current state of scientific research on journalistic news development, the methods for verifying social media content will be demonstrated using the example of ZDF news programs. So-called OSINT tools are used to check the news material for truthfulness, geolocation, chronolocation, and source. The advancement of AI is another gateway for disinformation in journalism. Participants will learn the most important methods themselves and practice them using interactive examples. Workshop reports from ZDF’s current affairs programming are also part of the workshop.

Schedule:

Friday, 19. Many students work at Johannes Gutenberg University for years without getting to know the city of Mainz and its history. For example, many are unaware that Mainz played a prominent role as a military and administrative center in Roman antiquity and was one of the most important economic and cultural centers north of the Alps. Around 13/12 BC, the Romans founded the legionary camp Mogontiacum here, named after the Celtic god Mogon. From the beginning, the site served as the headquarters of Roman legions and as a strategic outpost to secure the border on the Rhine (Limes).

Mogontiacum quickly developed into an important military, economic, and cultural center: in addition to the military camp, a civilian settlement with crafts, trade, and temple complexes sprang up. Under Emperor Domitian, Mainz became the seat of the governor of the province of Germania Superior. Important buildings such as the large amphitheater, aqueducts, and an extensive road network attest to the urban character of the city.

At the same time, Mainz was a cultural hub between the Roman and local populations. Numerous finds—inscriptions, statues, and gravestones—bear witness to the fusion of Roman, Celtic, and Germanic traditions.

The two-day workshop examines Mainz during the Roman Empire (Mogontiacum) as a border town of outstanding military, economic, and cultural significance. This increase in support, particularly in structurally weak regions and among younger voters, reflects, among other things, growing dissatisfaction with the established parties. The latter are faced with the question of how to deal with the AfD’s increased influence. Most parties reject direct cooperation with the AfD, which makes it difficult to form stable coalitions. At the same time, there is the challenge of taking the concerns of voters who have turned to the AfD seriously and incorporating them into the political debate.

Dealing with the AfD after the 2026 state elections will therefore become a key issue for the political future of Rhineland-Palatinate. A careful balance must be struck between upholding democratic principles and integrating different social currents into the political discourse. What strategies have the established parties pursued in recent years and how effective have they been? What lessons can be learned from the experiences of other European countries? And why is it crucial for the future of liberal democracy to consider appropriate responses?

The Q+Workshop provides space for analysis, reflection, and discussion. Together, we will take a look at the results of the state elections and put them into context. After an overview of the current state of research on the rise and influence of far-right parties in Europe, we will discuss the possibilities and limitations of political and social approaches to dealing with the AfD. In small groups, we will critically examine the arguments for and against a possible ban. Finally, we will develop perspectives on how liberal democracy as a whole can be strengthened.

Schedule:

Tuesday, 28. At a time when demographic change, social inequality, and cultural diversification are challenging existing patterns of solidarity, innovative concepts of social cohesion are increasingly becoming the focus of scientific and socio-political debates. The Q+Seminar “Building social bridges instead of digging trenches: Multigenerational projects as socio-spatial laboratories for the future” addresses the vision of multigenerational projects as promising socio-spatial fields of experimentation for new forms of coexistence – also with a view to counteracting increasing social division. The aim is not to play different interests off against each other, but to systematically link them and examine their mutual potential. When it comes to basic social needs such as housing, work, and care, synergies can be identified across generations: while younger people are often looking for affordable housing, professional flexibility, and social networking, older people often have spatial resources, experiential knowledge, and time at their disposal. Multigenerational arrangements could bring these complementary needs together and give rise to new forms of solidarity-based everyday organization that go beyond purely economic efficiency logic. In this exciting field of research, questions of social justice, participation, and sustainable public services would be renegotiated, and social division would not be accepted as an inevitable result of modern differentiation, but rather as a challenge that can be actively addressed with innovative, intergenerational concepts.

On the first day of the two-part Q+Workshop, we will learn about demographic developments in Germany and their consequences for urban planning in the coming decades. In a further step, synergies will be identified, systematically linked, and examined for their mutual potential. The results will be taken up and further developed in another Q+seminar in the coming winter semester 2026/27.

Schedule:

Thursday, 21. The two-day workshop “Study more, stress less. Studying between pressure to perform and self-care” combines scientific perspectives with practical methods of prevention and health promotion. It is aimed at students who want to understand how social, institutional, and personal factors shape their studies – and who want to learn how to deal with stress in a reflective and mindful way. On the first day, Prof. Dr. Katharina Diehl (FAU Erlangen) will examine the topic from a medical sociological perspective: Social inequalities are already apparent in the transition from school to university, but the transition itself is also associated with changes in health behavior and mental health. During their studies, correlations between health and socioeconomic status become apparent, with perceived injustice also being linked to the individual health of students. All these aspects will be addressed in her lecture and discussed on the basis of current data for Germany. Also on this first day, Prof. Dr. Thomas Rigotti (JGU Mainz) will explain the mechanisms of performance pressure, stress, and resilience from a psychological perspective. In his lecture, Prof. Dr. Rigotti will show how students can specifically strengthen their resilience in everyday student life. The focus is on practical strategies for dealing with stress, pressure to perform, and challenges in their studies. Through practical ideas and suggestions for reflection, participants will be given tools to build their mental resilience in the long term.

The program is supplemented by small group work and student presentations, which provide space for personal experiences, exchange, and reflection. The second day takes participants first to the Ober-Olmer Forest, where guided forest bathing (Shinrin Yoku) with Simone Eckert (Happy Yoga Flow) takes place – a conscious immersion in nature to promote mindfulness and relaxation. Structured perception exercises activate stress regulation mechanisms that can help prevent overload, especially in everyday student life. The intervention also supports concentration, mental relaxation, and a reflective approach to one’s own resources. Back at JGU, there will be a lecture by Prof. Dr. Pavel Dietz (JGU Mainz/Mainz University Medical Center), who will present scientifically based individual and institutional resources for student self-care. Current research findings on stress factors in university life and effective prevention and intervention approaches will be presented. The focus here will be on promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior. The lecture will also offer practical ideas on how self-care can be strengthened at the individual level and sustainably supported by university structures. A practical qigong session with Mona Ülker (Mainz University Medical Center) and a joint concluding discussion will round off the day. Through slow, coordinated movements and controlled breathing, qi gong can regulate the activity of the autonomic nervous system and thereby reduce stress-related physiological reactions. Studies show that regular qi gong practice is associated with a significant decrease in perceived stress. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of stress mechanisms, reflect on their own resources and stressors, and learn practical methods for relaxation and self-care. As places of free expression, academic reflection, and social debate, universities have always had a special responsibility to defend democratic values. Right-wing extremist groups are therefore increasingly attempting to use the university space for propaganda, recruitment, or targeted provocations.

In Germany, too, the currently very realistic prospect of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party entering government is raising considerable concerns about academic freedom and the autonomy of educational institutions. Among other things, universities could be exposed to increased political influence, for example through ideologically motivated interference in curricula, research funding, and personnel decisions.

So how do we protect ourselves when pressure from right-wing extremist forces on us as members of a university increases? How do we, as teachers or students, respond in concrete terms when our university self-governance or our culture of debate is interfered with?

In this Q+Workshop, we will first examine the current state of right-wing extremist tendencies in German higher education.
